Ron Thomson begins his fifth season as the New Mexico Highlands strength and conditioning coach.

In 2015, Thomson was given the Masters Award in the College Strength and Conditioning field for 2015.

Thomson came to New Mexico Highlands with more than 30 years of experience in not only high school, but also at all levels of NCAA athletics. Before joining the athletic staff at Highlands, he was the strength and conditioning coach at NCAA Division-I UW-Milwaukee.

In Thomson's time as a strength coach, he has worked with 24 teams that have received NCAA postseason bids, 23 teams that have won conference championships (including indoor and outdoor track and field at Highlands in 2015), 11 teams that have received football bowl game invitations, trained nine individual Olympic athletes and worked with three teams that have won national championships. His resume includes positions with SMU in the midst of their heyday in football (1982-85), Marshall (1986-87), Boise State (1986-94) and Purdue (1999-2011).

He also served on the weightlifting staff at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. Thomson has worked with the likes of Drew Brees (Super Bowl winning quarterback with the New Orleans Saints) and David Boudia (gold medal in diving in the 10-meter platform apparatus at the 2012 London Olympics).
